We continue our Harry Potter trail to the City of Gloucester,
where centuries ago, the Romans marched over the Cotswold Hills, saw beneath them
the lush Severn Valley and decided to build a garrison. From that point on visitors
have made Gloucester the focal point of their travels. Gloucester Cathedral is
one of Europe's enduring architectural glories and has been a place of worship
for over 1,300 years. The cathedral provided the backdrop for several scenes in
the Harry Potter movies and pupils from nearby King's School provided the extras.
We then cross the border into Wales and visit the ruins of Tintern Abbey which
lies between the River Wye and the southern end of Tintern Abbey. The hills around
the Abbey are covered with woods, changing colour with the season. The actual
ruins are now carefully looked after carefully and receive a good number of visitors. The
tour then visits Chepstow Castle which was built in 1067 as a base for the Norman
conquest of South East Wales. The importance of the site is demonstrated by the
fact that it is the first stone castle built in Wales, if not the whole country.
