Driving into the Cotswolds Hills our journey will explore
the very best of this delightful region near the heart of England and a selection
of its most picturesque villages. The tour will visit Burford, a leading wool
town in the 14th century with wonderful half timbered buildings. The pretty villages
of Upper Slaughter and Lower Slaughter are about a mile apart. Lower Slaughter
as the name implies is downstream of Upper Slaughter, and the river is a feature
of the village as it flows between neatly mown grass banks. At nearly 800 feet,
Stow-on-the-Wold is the highest town in the Cotswolds. It's Royal Charter was
granted in 1107, and it has been an important Cotswold cross roads for a thousand
years. Round the picturesque square, pubs and tea rooms, shops and hotels jostle
for space.
Our visit to Blenheim Palace offers a wonderful experience for
all the family. It is one of England's most magnificent stately homes, the ancestral
seat of the Duke of Marlborough and the birth place of Sir Winston Churchill.
You will be inspired by the majesty of the Palace and intrigued by the apartments
devoted to Sir Winston Churchill. Set in glorious parkland, Blenheim can be exciting
to look at in all seasons and is the supreme example of English Baroque architecture.
Our tour will incorporate a visit to Warwick Castle, considered by many
as simply the greatest medieval castle in Great Britain. With a history that dates
back over 1,000 years, Warwick Castle will take you back in time - enter over
the footbridge and explore the castle's ramparts, towers and gardens. Visit the
waxwork displays of Madame Tussauds, where you can watch, and hear, the Earl of
Warwick's preparations for battle. Then take a look at the ghostly dungeons where
prisoners were tortured
We stop overnight in Stratford - the birth place
of William Shakespeare and home to the theatres of the world-renowned Royal Shakespeare
country. A delightful river winds through the town and past the beautiful Holy
Trinity church, where Shakespeare lies buried. There are some wonderful half-wooden
buildings that date back to Shakespeare's time, including the famous cottage of
Anne Hathaway, who married the great writer in 1582. The overnight stay will allow
you the opportunity to enjoy visit to the theatre.
