We travel west out of the city passing the birthplace
of Mary Queen of Scots, Linlithgow Palace, and continuing
towards Stirling, with it's imposing castle and views
to the Wallace Monument. This Victorian Gothic tower was
opened in 1869 to commemorate Scotland's most famous freedom
fighter, Sir William Wallace, immortalised in the Mel
Gibson film Braveheart. We then pass Doune, famously the
set of the very British movie Monty Python and the Quest
for the Holy Grail, before passing in to Callander for
refreshments.
We then enter the Highlands and head north passing
Loch Luibnaig, Loch Earn, Crainlarich and Tyndrum with
a lunch stop en route. Continuing northwards we travel
through Glencoe, scene of the great massacre of the
McDonald clan in 1692, past Fort William and up to Commando
Memorial at Spean Bridge with its spectacular views
of Ben Nevis. A perfect photo opportunity!
We now pass through the splendour of the Five Sisters
of Kintail, the mountains guarding the pass on the route
to the Isle of Skye. We stop to visit the Eilean Donan
Castle, originally set at the junction of three lochs
as protection against Viking raiders and made famous
as the setting for the film Highland. Crossing over
the bridge to Skye, we head towards Portree stopping
for dinner along the way. In the early evening you are
dropped off at your accommodation and you are then free
to explore the surrounding town.
DAY 3
Today is a flexible day and there are many people depending
on the weather. Make the most of your driver / guides
extensive knowledge to develop a personalised itinerary
for your day.
A popular example is to travel north through the awesome
Quiraing mountain pass and enjoy a spectacular walk
through Skye's amazing landscape, slowly shaped over
millennium. Visit Kilt Rock, so called because of its
structure of basalt columns, reminiscent of the pleats
in kilt, and complete with a waterfall cascading over
the cliff and into the sea below.
Following lunch you may choose to travel to Neist Point
for a walk out to the lighthouse that marks the furthest
westerly point on Skye. Or possibly go to Dunvegan Castle,
ancient ancestral of the Clan McLeod, or the Talisker
Distillery, or the famous Quillian Hills. We return
you to your accommodation in Portree in the early evening
for another relaxing night spent at your leisure in
the town.
DAY 4
After collecting you form your accommodation, we travel
south through the Quillin Hills and follow the old drovers
road to catch the small ferry (summer period only) over
to Glenlg on the mainland. This is a magical and enchanting
journey with seals frequently viewed in the water. The
region of Carmusfearne is also where Gavin Maxwell,
author of the novel Ring of Bright Water, lived with
his otters. After a relaxing coffee break, we continue
to ascend to the top of the Mam Ratagan mountain pass
and stop to admire the stunning views over Loch Duich
and the Five Sisters of Kintail.
Continuing onto Loch Ness for lunch and the exciting
possibility of spotting 'Nessie' - the huge creature
said to inhabit the Loch. A boat trip is available during
the summer months that will get you closer to solving
the mystery! We then turn south through the Grampian
mountains along Loch Laggan, famous now as Monarch of
the Glen country. We then pass Dawahinnie, home to Scotland's
highest whiskey distillery, and onward past Blair Castle
stopping for refreshments before heading back to Edinburgh
past Perth and over the Fort Road Bridge. Arrival
back into Edinburgh at approx. 19.30
There is the option at this point to catch the sleeper
train back to London this evening or to remain an extra
day and enjoy Edinburgh's rich culture. Maybe visit
Edinburgh Castle (home to the annual Edinburgh Military
Tattoo), visit the shops along the famous Princes Street,
stroll along the Royal Mile or enjoy a dram of Scottish
whiskey in an authentic Scottish drinking establishment.
